Shopping, site seeing, eating good food, and generally relaxing
“The trip provided for me from Rae of Hope was exactly what was needed right now. It was the first time my husband and I have gotten to go on a trip in over 7 years, and with the money I have had to spend on medical expenses since my cancer diagnosis in 2022, the extra money to be able to take a trip just has not been there. It was an incredible experience just being able to take a break from everything- I worked all through cancer treatment and chemo and surgeries and honestly I didn’t even realize that I needed a break. The room provided for us was amazing, was an upgraded room with a private patio off of it with beautiful views of the surrounding farmland. Rae of Hope also provided a gift card for us to be able to eat and enjoy the amazing food and beautiful shop attached to our hotel. It was exactly just what was needed. I returned home with incredible memories of time being able to spend with my husband and will forever be grateful to Rae of Hope and YASU.”

Rockport Inn in Rockport Massachusetts / Nazwa Resort in NH.
We spent the days exploring the Rockport art shops, enjoying the ocean at Plum Island and hiking Mt Major
“This trip was a beautiful opportunity to explore new locations, try new things and eat amazing food. To have the opportunity to get away and experience new things is a wonderful way to remember what it is to live, to be spontaneous, to do things that are hard and still have fun. It was an opportunity to do something that would have been impossible 5 years ago and it felt incredible to make up for a little bit of lost time.”

Cedar Point
Spent 2 days in the park and downtime on the beach
“So very grateful for this trip! Last summer we had plans to take our two teenage daughters to Cedar Point but… cancer ended up stealing away our summer last year. So happy that we got to have this experience together this year. We all had so much fun! In addition to the park we spent time on the beach hanging out and playing volleyball. My favorite memory was walking along the shore line and watching the sunrise. Thank you so much for providing us with these happy stress free family memories. It was so nice to see the kids being kids this summer.”

Disney cruise, we met characters, watched movies, family activities
“This was the perfect way for my family to come together and forget about my diagnosis for a little bit. “After my long year’s battle with breast cancer my children were finally able to just be kids with no care in the world. They were so excited for this adventure and I was so happy to be able to make lasting memories with them. I was so happy to spend time together as a family and just relax. I spent a year going through chemotherapy treatments, radiation and numerous surgeries. Our lives were torn upside down, this truly gave us a sense of normalcy. I’m very fortunate for this opportunity.”

Gervasi Winery
Facial, wine tasting, dinner and an overnight stay
“Gervasi Winery was exactly what I needed heading into my 43rd birthday. The year prior I went through 16 rounds of chemo, a double mastectomy and two more surgeries because of a rare mycobacterium abscessus infection. I was in between IV antibiotic treatments while on my trip at the winery. From the gorgeous room, spa, wine tasting and dinner , I felt so relaxed and carefree . It was exactly what I needed to escape reality for a couple of days. I can’t thank YASU and Rae of Hope enough for the generosity and coordination of this much needed trip.”

Caribbean cruise and a couple days in Florida
Kennedy Space Center
“When I was approved for the respite trip my in-laws had already planned and paid for a cruise for our family to go on. The extras like dinner and museums were on us. Before we were approved for the respite trip my wife and I knew we would have a great vacation, but wouldn’t be able to afford to do much. This allowed us to have an absolutely amazing vacation! We went to a couple local restaurants while we were on the cruise. We went to Kennedy Space Center the day we got back. And I was able to check off a bucket list item! I got to watch a rocket launch from the beach the night before we came home! This was the first time since I was diagnosed in 2017 that my wife and I were actually able to disconnect and really relax! Thank you to YASU for this wonderful opportunity!”

Switzerland (Weinfelden)
Trip to Switzerland to Attend the baptism of Benjamin (now my stepson), my best friends’ (sister by choice!) Margarita
“The Pandemic broke our tradition of visiting each other every year, and soon after that, my cancer diagnosis came at the same time that the life of Benjamin began in my best friend’s womb (more like my sister). The entire Atlantic Ocean separated us for four years during which we couldn’t hug each other through the most important life-changing events of our lives. Margarita, my best friend (shall I say more like my sister) had moved to Switzerland in 2020 after getting married. We texted daily. I remember she would pray with me on the phone late at night or early in the morning when I was too scared to even speak during chemo and hospitalized. We cried over the FaceTime so many times. I met Benjamin through a camera. We texted or called each almost daily, hoping that the “miracle” of being reunited would come one day. When Jonas (her husband) and Margarita told me I was going to be Benjamin’s stepmother, my entire world was flipped around. Not only was it a gesture of entrusting me with their only child’s faith journey (a huge honor in our religion), but it also meant they trusted I was meant to LIVE to see Benjamin grow. It hit me: this cancer is not defining my life right now (I am in remission). As she tried to work out accommodations for my role as godmother to be possible without attending the baptism (given my current health challenges), I told her: we will do this together, we will celebrate his baptism as his family. They immediately booked the flight. This “Rae or Hope trip” has given me one of the most powerful, and beautiful memories of my life! Hugging Benjamin (my now stepson) and Margarita again meant the world to me: I felt that a little ray of light came back to my life, that some sense of hope and a future that can be shared with those I love the most: is still possible! Once I arrived at the church the day of the baptism (In Switzerland), for the first time in years, I cried for hours… but this time around these were tears of gratitude, joy, and hope! Thank you for making our “miracle” come true.”

After spending 18 weeks in the hospital and countless additional days at the clinic throughout these past two years, a weekend of relaxation and fun was a much needed break! Disney World
2-Day Park Hopper to visit the parks
“It was great to attend Disney World and be able to just enjoy myself and not have to worry about all the stress that comes along with having cancer. I was definitely exhausted after my trip, but that was expected after all the walking that is involved with Disney. I wouldn’t have traded the trip for anything other than Disney. It’s such a magical happy place to me and my mom.”

Buhl Mansion – PA
Facials, Massage & Mud Wrap
“The mansion was beautiful & comfortable! Our room was huge & romantic. My husband & I enjoyed our spa experiences. It was very relaxing after having the burden of my cancer treatments the past 7 months! This was our first overnight trip without our child. But since we were only an hour away, I didn’t need to stress about leaving. We both needed time to reset, so we could prepare for my upcoming surgery. I truly appreciate everyone involved to make this overnight trip happen for me. Thank you!”

North Topsail Beach, NC
Couples Massage, Dinners & Beach Time
“So grateful for this much needed respite weekend! The Airbnb was absolutely beautiful. Well decorated and in a wonderful location about center of North topsail with a beach view balcony above the dunes. It was so nice to open the door at night and hear the waves crashing. Sit on the balcony and watch the waves with coffee in hand. (2of my favorite things in this life)There is just something about that that makes everything feel right in your soul! It was Close enough to my daughter who babysat my dog, although we did pick her up for some beach fun in the mornings for sunrise and toes in the sand. We even ran across some roots on the beach in the form of a ribbon which was very fitting. We went shell hunting in multiple areas on the north and south points of topsail. We had a couples massage in a very nice spa in surf city. Sharing this experience with my boyfriend/ caregiver/ greatest supporter was what we both needed and we felt all the stresses melt away.
My daughter, her husband and my grandkids met us for dinner at a newer Mexican restaurant in surf city after our massage. During our stay We even got to experience Topsail Steamer (featured on shark tank) with a take home and steam yourself bucket of seafood. So fresh and amazing.
I don’t think I have felt this “normal” since before my diagnosis. I can’t thank all who contributed to this experience enough! I didn’t have a worry in the world for a whole weekend! Thanks from the bottom of my heart! “

Splash Lagoon – PA
Swam, Ate & Played
“I am writing to express my deepest gratitude for selecting my family for the Rae of Hope opportunity. Words cannot fully capture how much this experience has meant to us.
When I was diagnosed with lymphoma while my daughter was just a toddler, I was overwhelmed with fear. I was terrified that I wouldn’t be able to share moments like this with her. Even after my health stabilized, financial challenges lingered, making opportunities like these seem out of reach. Fast forward to today, and I still can’t believe we got to celebrate our birthdays—including my daughter’s 8th!—at Splash Lagoon in Erie. It was our first time there, and watching our budding mermaid laugh and play in the water was pure magic.
I am not only grateful for the trip itself but also for the thoughtful selection of Rae’s favorite things that you shared with us. Knowing Rae’s story and her love for small getaways and relaxing moments makes this experience even more meaningful. I feel a connection to her and am inspired by the beautiful legacy she left behind.
Thank you for creating this program and for giving families like mine the chance to make unforgettable memories. Your kindness and generosity have touched our lives in ways we will never forget.”

Times Square, NYC
Broadway Show
- "My Rae of Hope trip lined up with my 30th birthday as well as the Christmas season, and I had one goal in mind: to see the giant Christmas tree at the Rockefeller Center in NYC. Thanks to YASU, my fiancée and I stayed in a lovely hotel right in Times Square, with Broadway just a few steps away. The night before my birthday, we saw the hilarious and talented Broadway production of The Book of Mormon with excellent seats. The next day— my birthday— we were able to go shopping, visit The Museum of Broadway, and eat a ramen dinner. I saw the giant Christmas tree the week before Christmas, which was off the chart levels of magical. I was so thankful to go on the trip with my beloved partner after a long year of sickness and treatment. It lifted my spirits so much, and just in time for Christmas. "

Berkeley Springs, WV.
Cabin with hot tub, fireplace, and amazing views for an amazing weekend of peace. Also had dinner two nights!
"The weekend away prior to my surgery (double mastectomy planned for 4/4) was exactly what I needed to help get to a place of peace and calmness. As a single mom of two boys (ages 6 and 4) I have been naturally anxious through this process of treatment. This trip allowed me to escape my cancer diagnosis, connect with nature, and totally “Reset” to have a clear mind to heal prior to major surgery. I cannot thank everyone from YASU enough for the kindness and dedication Because you all truly MAKE A DIFFERENCE!!! "

Joshua Tree, CA
Hiking and stargazing in Joshua Tree National Park, reading and relaxing at a beautiful Airbnb, soaking in hot tub, walking through museums and outdoor art parks, browsing Pioneertown shops and enjoying local restaurants
"Joshua Tree was beautiful - a welcomed, quiet, peaceful escape from San Francisco city life. We stayed at a beautiful Airbnb, where we enjoyed reading by the fire, soaking in the hot tub, and stargazing at night. We spent a day hiking in Joshua Tree National Park and ended the day watching the most incredible sunset illuminate the landscape with various shades of oranges, purples, and blues. Another day was spent in Pioneertown, an 1880s themed old western town often used as a shooting location for western films, browsing local shoppes, and walking through Noah Purifoy's outdoor Desert Art Museum. The trip was truly magical, calming, centering, and I left feeling peaceful and grateful. Dealing with a cancer diagnosis, chemo, surgery, and the related physical/mental/emotional challenges has made the past year of my life feel so chaotic and traumatic. This trip allowed me to leave those feelings behind for a few days and exist in a different space - one full of rest, relaxation, exploration, and spending quality time with my wife and our puppy. I am so grateful to YASU and the Rae of Hope Program for providing this program, without which I may not have been motivated to do something for myself - something as simple as planning a short trip that proved to be more beneficial to my spirit and mental health than I could have ever imagined."

The Osthoff Resort in Elkhart Lake, WI
Shopping at the Christmas Market & Spa Day
"This trip was a great time for Leslie and me to spend together doing something fun that was not cancer-related. Leslie helped me so much during my cancer treatments that I wanted to take her on this trip as a way to say "Thank You". We enjoyed The Christmas Market and using the gift card to get food & drinks at the resort. The room at the resort was so nice and we felt so comfortable there. In the morning we started our Spa Day with the Salt Room Experience and finished with lounging in the sauna. We had a wonderful time relaxing and putting all our normal daily responsibilities on hold. This was truly a respite trip for both of us and helped us return home feeling refreshed."

Richmond VA - Nocturnal Garden AirBnB, Vitality Float Spa, Edgar Allen Poe Museum, Philly Vegan, Stella's, Millie's Diner
60 min Float Therapy, 60 min Full Body Massage w/ Essential Oils, CBD Cream, Hot Stones and Cupping, Breakfast, Dinner, Museum, the works!
"It was a beautiful drive to Richmond. We chose somewhere relatively close so most of our time could be spent exploring and enjoying all the city had to offer. We were so excited about the vegan and vegetarian options, which are non-existent where we currently live. The AirBnB was so stunning. I couldn't believe we got to stay there. We took so many pictures and videos and put it all over our social media and had so many friends reaching out asking about it. I just finished treatment. I have not done anything out in the public other than work, treatment, and Doctor's appointments, so it was so refreshing to get out of my apartment and to experience life outside of cancer. This trip was coordinated in hopes of celebrating my birthday for the first time since being diagnosed with cancer, and I'm so thankful that was able to happen. I was in the hospital due to complications from treatment on my actual birthday earlier last week, and the hope I had for this past weekend honestly helped me push through and recover quickly. I was in such a bad head space, and my depression was pretty severe surrounding this as I reflected on this past year and what I had hoped it would look like, and as I mourned what my life would like, and being in the emergency room for my birthday was just a new low and not how I wanted to begin 32. This weekend gave me space away from everything. I got to exist in a world where cancer wasn't ruling everything. I was just celebrating my birthday with my boyfriend and having a spa day and eating delicious food and exploring a beautiful city and shopping. It was so carefree, and I don't think I felt that sort of relief since I was diagnosed in April. Thank you. Thank you much. It truly gave me and my boyfriend, who has cared for me since day once, the rest and relaxation we so desperately needed. And because everything was covered we actually got to spend money on some fun things for each other which we haven't been able to do in a long time because of my medical bills. This was exactly what I needed, and I had no idea just how badly I would need it, when I applied all those months ago."

Rockaway Beach, OR
Rented a house at the beach with a view of the ocean
"My family took a few days off work and school and went to the beach for an extended weekend. The house was right across the street from the beach with a view of the ocean from the upstairs living area. We went on many beach walks, which is one of my favorite things to do. One day I took my chair and book down to the beach and read in the sun for an hour. The weather was beautiful, the kids enjoyed playing putt-putt golf and visiting the tide-pools and a lighthouse, and we all had fun just hanging out away from home. Every morning we slept in and lounged around the house enjoying each other's company. We visited the shops in town and ate lunch one day at a corn-dog place. We also drove over to the Tillamook Creamery to eat ice cream and watch them make cheese. I came home feeling grateful to be alive and able to spend this time with my beautiful family. I couldn't have asked for a better trip."

"Concerts have always been a favorite for me so when I was reading about the Rae of Hope program I knew exactly what I wanted to do! My best friend and I were treated to a delicious dinner followed by floor seats at the Jelly Roll concert at PPG Paints Arena. What an experience! It was my first concert post cancer and it did not disappoint! It was so nice to just be in the moment and forget about life for a little. Cancer will always be a part of who I am but this trip felt like turning the page to a new chapter! This program is an amazing opportunity for people like me to get a break and do something enjoyable. Thank you to everyone who made this trip possible! We had a great time! "

"I’m so grateful to Rae of Hope for choosing me to go on a once in a lifetime trip to Nashville, Tennessee. I haven’t been away in 15 years prior to this trip and it was just what I needed to relax, enjoy and not think about anything cancer related.
It was so nice to ignore all medical calls for a couple of days and just be me. Going to Nashville, TN was exhilarating, and life changing a trip I’ll never forget. The massage Rae of Hope included was so relaxing and just what I needed.

Overnight at Omni Bedford Springs, PA
Dinner and Massage
"This overnight spa trip was such a dream for both my mom and me. We've never gone away together, just the two of us, so the quality time alone was special, but we especially enjoyed our time in the spa. The trip landed on the one-year anniversary of finishing chemo and I couldn't have asked for a more fitting way to celebrate than to fully relax and recharge and to share that same gift to my mom, who was not only a big caregiver and cheerleader for me but also a two-time cancer survivor herself. Our massages were divine, the spa ritual afterward was so luxurious and fun, and the extra amenities and treats made us feel totally taken care of. I'm so grateful for the experience!"

Elk Cove Inn & Spa, CA
2 night stay at a bed and breakfast
"Simon and I had an amazing trip! It was exactly what we needed to unwind a bit from the crazy year we had last year when I was in active treatment. Thanks again to YASU and the donors for making this trip possible. We had a chance to spend Memorial Day weekend at a cute little B&B up the coast of northern California in Elk, CA. We had a wonderful time driving along the coastline and also being amongst the redwood trees. During the trip, we were able to disconnect from our phones and reconnect with nature and each other. Simon even convinced me to climb down the rocks and go onto the beach during low tide so that we can explore the tidepools and sea caves. I greatly appreciated being picked for this Rae of Hope experience."

Hutchinson Shores Resort & Spa, Jensen Beach, FL
Stay in oceanfront room with massages and dinner for Dana and friend, Kim
"I was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer shortly after my 40th birthday. Talk about a mid-life crisis. I immediately began 16 rounds of chemotherapy followed by a double mastectomy with immediate reconstruction. I was told it would be a shitty year, but that it was curable and I would survive. I expected to be thriving again post-surgery. I was not prepared for what comes post-active treatment. Chemo-induced menopause and weight gain. Awkward hair regrowth. Inflammatory arthritis as a result of my immunotherapy. I had managed to go my whole life, including all of active treatment and a double mastectomy, without spending a single night in the hospital, but then I had a bad reaction to my first rheumatology medication that landed me in the hospital for two nights. I had to cancel a flight I had booked to visit a friend in Florida.
A couple months later, while I’m still battling these side effects, I’m finally back in the gym and trying to make sure I also walk 10k steps a day. I’m learning patience and giving myself more grace. Several weeks ago, I was finally able to reschedule my trip to Florida and, thanks to YASU’s Rae of Hope program, I was able to celebrate all of this with my dear friend and supporter Kim. We enjoyed an overnight stay at Hutchinson Shores Resort & Spa. We stayed in an oceanfront room, enjoyed massages at Opal Spa, had dinner oceanside at Drift Kitchen & Bar, woke up the next morning and walked the beach before having a poolside breakfast. It was perfect and just what I needed after the past 16 months. A huge thank you to YASU and all of its sponsors for making Rae of Hope and all of YASU’s programs possible for young adult survivors like myself. "

Spa day at Refuge Spa with partner, Nathan
"Thank you Rae of Hope! I could not have asked for a more perfect trip. My partner and I are tremendously grateful for this organization and their amazing staff who made sure we were well taken care of. After finishing treatment for brain cancer I restarted my graduate program and have been entirely focused on studying and my health. Rae of Hope allowed me to set aside those daily responsibilities and reflect on what I've accomplished since finishing cancer treatment. It was a wonderful way for my partner and I to celebrate together. We visited Carmel, a beautiful beach town, where my partner and I enjoyed a relaxing spa day, delicious dinner, and gorgeous views of the water- all thanks to Rae of Hope! I am so appreciative to the donors and staff who made this trip possible. Thank you for your generosity and for allowing myself and other cancer patients to put aside their troubles for a bit and enjoy the extra time we were given as a cancer survivor. "

"It was amazing! I was celebrating almost 5 years cancer free and starting a new life, with a new job, a new house, and new experiences! I was able to bond with my new boyfriend and was remembering the feeling of hearing cancer free. Cancer has changed my life, but it no longer defines me. The trip to Cedar Point reminded me how lucky I am to be breathing, thank you YASU!"

Myrtle Beach
Airbnb in Myrtle Beach with husband and son
"The Rae of Hope grant helped make it possible for us to travel with my son to attend and play in a Ripken Baseball Tournament. Without these funds, we were unsure if we were going to be able to make the trip due to the cost. It relieved a lot of financial stress and helped us focus more on enjoying our vacation together. Besides baseball, we were able to go to the beach, the boardwalk, mini-golfing, and hang out by the pool. Thank you so much YASU for helping us attend this once-in-a-lifetime event!"

Saguaro Lake Ranch and Talking Stick Resort Spa, Orange Sky Restaurant
Horseback riding, full spa day, and dinner at the resort
"April 19 is a very difficult day for me. It is the anniversary of when I lost my great uncle, my person, who died by suicide. It is also the anniversary of my cancer diagnosis. I always try to do something special for myself on that day. It’s usually a horseback ride and some time to myself. Having the ability to go on the ride and then have a day to myself getting pampered and relaxing was such a blessing. It was so relaxing I fell asleep during some of my spa treatments. After the spa, I was able to go to a really nice dinner at the restaurant in the hotel. The food was so good! It was really a blessing to have that day and be able to kind of sit with the anniversaries and think about what they mean to me. It was definitely a once in a lifetime opportunity for me since I would never be able to afford that type of spa service or that dinner. I encourage everyone to opportunity because it is truly a gift that will stay with you forever."

2-day tickets to Wrestlemania 40 in Philadelphia with wife, Elisa
"It was amazing, we went to both nights of wrestlemania 40 which has been a dream of mine since I was 5 years old. It happened in Philadelphia, PA which is my Wife's hometown and a place I used to visit alot in my twenties for vacation. Along with wrestlemania, we met up with friends and family and went to other wrestling events in the area on Thursday and Friday. Watching wrestlemania itself live was crazy, I don't think I'll ever have an experience like that again. I am endlessly grateful to YASU for making such a wonderful dream come true."

"This weekend is hard to put in words, me and my kids have not been able to take a trip together in a long time, and this was exactly what we needed. Between sightseeing, being a tourist, and the comedy show. We laughed so hard that we were all crying. Not only was we able to go to the comedy show but my son, who is a huge Mike Epps and was able to personally meet him. My daughter was able to get the cowgirl boots that she had been wanting and I got to enjoy every moment of watching the smiles on their faces. It was so exciting, renewing and fun that both of them want to make it an every other month event for us just to take a weekend trip just to regroup, rewind, and get to enjoy each other."

Walt Disney World
Two night stay at All-Star Movies Resort with a 2 day park hopper pass to Magic Kingdom and Epcot with husband, Rolando
"In 2019, I was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma at the age of 25. My husband and I were engaged and while I was receiving treatments, we married and took our honeymoon on a Disney Cruise. From there, Disney has always held a special place in our hearts! Last year, I was told I needed cell therapy at MD Anderson Cancer Center for 2 months. I found the Rae of Hope Program as this would be a great way to end my summer and “get away” from the day to day hustle of hospital and doctors. My first thought…Disney! We had never stayed on Disney property before and I wondered if it was possible. Lindsey was wonderful to communicate with and made my dream a reality! When we arrived, we had the best welcome in a preferred room close to all amenities! We spent the next day at Magic Kingdom. We were able to come back to our resort and relax before heading to Epcot the next day! I am truly grateful to YASU for this opportunity! You gave us teachers a bit of summer amongst the challenges! This is a trip I will always remember!"

"I cannot thank you enough for selecting me as a Rae of Hope recipient. My family and I were finally able to take a break from the grueling year of dealing with cancer. This was my sons’ first trip to Disney, and I was so excited to see the look of wonder on their faces as we went through the parks. It was my personal wish to stay at the Polynesian, and I couldn’t have been happier. The relaxed atmosphere is exactly what we all needed. We were able to make some core memories on this extra special trip. It is a trip that will hold a special place in our hearts as it felt like a reward for getting through the toughest time in our lives. We were able to be free of cancer stuff for a while and have some great family moments together. We are so grateful for this blessing."

"This trip was so wonderful. It started with the beautiful drive . Driving through the mountains of Pennsylvania. When we got there our room was beautiful. Loved the heart shaped tub and fireplace. After the last couple years have been rough with cancer and it was so nice to relax and just think about each other and not health issues. I am so thankful for Yasu giving us this opportunity. I have not felt this good in a long time. I had dessert from the restaurant at the hotel. It was like heaven. It was a chocolate bon bon . Hope to make it there again another time. Thank you Yasu for all you do. Trips like this are life changing and have a positive effect on the lives of cancer patients. Thank you so much for the positive effect you have in my life."

New Orleans
Three night stay at the Hotel St. Marie with boyfriend, Hisam
"This was a wonderful opportunity! My boyfriend and I had been wanting to take a trip to New Orleans for some time, and YASU graciously offered us a three-night stay at a wonderful hotel, Hotel St. Marie. We spent our days going to delicious restaurants, visiting Mardi Gras World, doing a street art tour, and enjoying a boat ride. The weather was gorgeous, and it was an opportunity for us to step away from our daily responsibilities and just enjoy the food, art, and culture of New Orleans. For a cancer survivor, this type of experience is crucial--just getting the chance to set aside health worries and enjoy the moment."

Two night stay at the Lyle Hotel and dinner at Albi with husband, Jose
"Jose and I had a lovely time during our respite trip in Washington DC. We stayed in a cozy boutique hotel in the heart of the beautiful neighborhood of Dupont Circle. We loved walking around the neighborhood, dining, and visiting local shops. During our stay, we also went to Planet Word, an interactive, fun, and engaging museum, and out for dinner to the middle eastern restaurant Albi. A gem! This trip allowed us to take a very much needed break after what felt like a long time and thanks to this we felt more energized and recharged upon our return."

"This trip allowed me to do something with my family at a time when I could never be able to do it on my own. My girls are really having a hard time accepting what is happening and this allowed for us to put that away for just a little while and enjoy a trip together. Making memories that they will have forever. In everyone’s life you never know how much time you have in my situation. I know I don’t have as long as some. My entire family appreciates this staff and support of this community which has proved that making a difference really does just that."

Asheville, NC
Three nights at Airbnb cottage in Asheville, NC with wife, Kady
"The trip provided my wife and I with a much-needed chance to reconnect. Through the long, stressful process of treatment and recovery, we focused so much on everything except for US. This trip gave us 3 days of relaxation, rest, reconnection and we did it all without a single thing being scheduled during our time there. We not only got to spend the majority of our time in the mountains without cell phone reception, hiking and climbing so many beautiful waterfalls! Our favorite was Graveyard Fields (see photo from the top of the Upper Falls). We fell in love with everything Asheville has to offer and are now even looking to own an Airbnb there so we can go any time we would like! We cannot thank YASU enough for affording us the chance to reconnect and focus on each other! Upon returning back to Pittsburgh we immediately felt recharged, motivated, and ready to take on the remaining challenges that a cancer diagnosis would inevitably bring. My advice to anyone considering a ROH Trip: TAKE IT! I needed to be convinced to take the trip and afterwards I couldn't be more thankful that we went."

Manicure & pedicure with tickets to Sip & Swirl at the Pittsburgh Zoo with friend, Laura
"My best friend and I had a wonderful experience. We are both YASU cancer survivors and rarely have the time these days to just relax due to our family and professional responsibilities. This November I celebrate 10 years post diagnosis and my birthday. We started our day at the Paint Nail Salon getting manicures and pedicures. We then got picked up by the car service and headed to the Pittsburgh Zoo’s Sip and Swirl Wine Tasting. We didn’t have to worry about driving home limiting our participation. We sipped and swirled with joy all night! We ended the night jumping back in the car just like a celebrity! It was magical. We had the opportunity to celebrate together and didn’t have to worry about taking care of others because YASU took care of us. We are so grateful to have this time together."

Three night stay in New Marlborough Airbnb with friends Leah (they/them) - 40, partner; Charlie (they/them) - 25, friend; Lu (they/them) - 29, friend; Lyric (they/them) - 21, friend; Ramona (they/them) - 28, friend; Bacon (she/her) - 7.5, dog/queen.
"The trip took place from New Year’s Eve through my early January birthday, capping the challenging but healing first year of my forties, and first year of remission after my cancer was labelled “incurable.” The unexpected gift of this respite trip allowed me to pause the scramble of daily life. In the company of my closest people, I was able to spend long days moving slowly. We rose late, strolled in the foothills of the Berkshires, and took turns cooking dinners of fresh veggies and fish and oh-so-much BUTTER. We read one another’s tarot cards for the year ahead and laughed at my goofy little Boston terrier’s clowning. The days were full by design of only the good, solid priorities which I am inviting into my life this coming year. Cancer has taught me that I cannot control my mortality. I hope for a cure but may not get it. Instead, I am learning to focus on what I can control, like the choice to spend more time with people I love and to treat the body I'm in with kindness, like good food, exercise, and long sleeps. Now, I’m back home, aware of all the usual pressures of work, money, bills, time. To remember what’s truly important, though, I need only to look backwards over these past days of respite. I hope these wonderful memories can be my touchstone throughout 2024."

August 6 - 8, 2023
Mariposa Inn & Suites in Monterey, CA
Two night stay at hotel along with kayaking and horseback riding for Renee and daughter, Ava
"There were so many incredible moments during our adventure it’s been so hard to write about just one! This one stood out-at one point while we were kayaking there was so much beautiful wildlife to observe all around us. The waves were calm but the wind was pushing us and I must have given our guide a worried look because she said to me “grab a hold of the kelp, let the ocean anchor you, take a minute to take it in, then paddle out”. It was like she knew my storm in a way. For nearly 21 years my mental medicine is the ocean. Every time I had to close my eyes to escape the Pediatric oncology ward or the last four years of breast cancer treatment I always imagined myself at the beach. Watching the waves, sometimes big, sometimes small. This time instead of being caught up in the waves I rode them gracefully, took a breath and took it in. As a parent with cancer that means our children walk through this journey with us-so to watch my daughter so courageously navigate uncharted waters asking brilliant questions and guide a powerful horse along a pacific coast trail like second nature. We bonded and shared such a memorable experience together that we both won’t ever forget and I’m so thankful! "

Bedford Springs Resort
Overnight stay at hotel with massages for Neha and sister, Prachi
"Rae of Hope allowed me to take a minute away from my own crazy life and share it with my sister (a pediatric oncologist) who is familiar, in her own, very real, way with cancer and the toll that it can take on everyone near it. My sister has always been a large part of my life but during treatment, she was my sister and also the doctor that fielded the most Qs from our close family and friends. She lives in Philadelphia and ROH allowed me to surprise her with a night in Bedford Springs and a massage. It was for me to relax and regroup after a stressful year but also for me to share with her. Bedford Springs was the perfect location because it’s between us. We met up in the morning and had a day to relax, take a breath, get dressed up and enjoy a lovely evening together. ROH made me feel supported by a community that “gets it” and also allowed me to share the love with someone that supports me and others in the cancer community everyday. Also we had an amazing 18 layer chocolate cake while we were there. Thank you Rae of Hope and YASU! "

Bedford Springs Resort
Two night stay at the hotel and massages for Carrie and husband, Corey
"As a full-time working mother of a 3-year-old and 4-year-old, it is very challenging to have time to catch up with myself and my partner. This feels even more important after getting diagnosed with cancer as we both need space to process and reflect. Being at Bedford Springs, Corey and I were able to do things that bring us together as a couple, like hiking, and have a chance to take care of our bodies and get alone time doing the bath ritual. Though life closed in around us again immediately afterward, it is good to have the reminder of what it feels like when we have the opportunity to prioritize our relationship and each other. "

Splash Lagoon, Erie, PA
Danielle, Michael, Peggy, Nathaniel, Madilynn, & Riley
Two nights at Hawthorn Suites and two days of passes to Splash lagoon with dining
"We planned our getaway on a week that I did not receive chemotherapy but unfortunately leading up to our trip, I ended up in the hospital for a few days needing a blood transfusion. Thankfully come Friday I felt great and ready to go! It was very simple for me to choose Splash Lagoon as I do everything with my family and kids. After requesting a new room at Hawthorne Inn and Suites, it was everything I could imagine! Two bedrooms with living room and kitchen, fireplace, and 2 very big jacuzzi tubs.
The hotel is attached to the water park so we did not have to leave the hotel once there. I get cold very easily and the 84* climate inside the water park felt amazing. There was so much there for the kids to enjoy and us adults too. Half way through the day Saturday, I was getting worn down but just sitting there in the water watching my kids enjoy themselves just warmed my heart. A little while later, I felt horrible and unfortunately ended up in bed from 430 pm til Sunday morning. Thankfully my husband and mom took the kids out to dinner and to the arcade for a while to enjoy themselves.
We had tickets for the water park Sunday but there was no way I could have gone. Thankfully the park was able to transfer the tickets onto another day trip! Now that the trip is over, I feel very thankful that we got to have that time together to make new memories. I am very blessed to have found this group and beyond thankful for this opportunity!"

Bedford Springs
Pamela with husband Adam and dog Hazel
Overnight stay at Bedford Springs, massage, and dining
"After partying too hard in heels at Wigout Friday night, the whole crew ventured out to Bedford Springs Saturday morning... with me sporting my knee brace and crutches. A gorgeous rolling property greeted us, and I felt instantly at peace. After checking in, the staff there was super accommodating of my unexpected mobility restrictions. We had a walking haunted history tour booked for that night. They generously provided me with a house wheelchair to scoot around, so I didn't have to miss it or struggle to walk it with crutches.
Dinner was by far the fanciest affair Adam and I have ever been treated to, and the facilities, including the breathtaking indoor pool and spa, were beautiful. Our room had an open-air walkout porch to relax on with a great vantage point of the front property. I was able to enjoy it while doing some schoolwork with a view in our downtime yesterday, so I stayed caught up in my homework."

November 13-15, 2022
Gralehaus Bed & Beverage - Louisville, KY
Merissa and husband Jake
Local brewery tour, couples massages, tour of a historic local sanatorium, stayed in a local bed and breakfast ("bed and beverage")
"Where to even begin? My Rae of Hope trip went above and beyond my expectations. Lindsey and Stephanie were both great when it came to working with me/my schedule/my preferences for the trip. I originally submitted 3 different trip locations but in the end I was easily able to narrow it down to just one. I was recommended by a friend to the specific place we stayed at and it was all around fantastic. The room made me feel like royalty - I used the HUGE soaking tub multiple times during our stay. It was also easy for me to scope out specific activities to do at my trip location.
My husband and I both LOVE exploring so the brewery tour was right up our alley. We had only done a professional couples massage once before, about 4 and a half years back, on our honeymoon. We both loved it so much then that I figured it could be a much needed break for our bodies this time too. The historic sanatorium tour was SO spooky and educational and just really tapped into my lifelong learning needs 🙂 I am a Hodgkin's lymphoma survivor and was diagnosed back in spring 2017 at the age of 24. Since then, I have done small things here and there to celebrate my remission anniversaries but I knew with this year being the big 5 year mark I wanted to go bigger. That was where this trip fit in perfectly - I was able to schedule it so that the last day of the trip fell on my exact remission anniversary date <3 It helped me take time for myself and reflect how the last five years have changed me in terms of the roller coaster of a journey it has been. When I knew I wanted to celebrate, I looked at my finances and just could not budget a full on party.
Having the Rae of Hope trip funded made my dreams of celebrating become an option once again. Afterwards, I felt like I could conquer my everyday stressors better. Especially with my yearly oncology appointment coming up, I was really dreading it before this trip. THANK YOU SO MUCH TO EACH AND EVERY DONOR OUT THERE <333"

Newport, Rhode Island: The Newport Mansions Tours (The Breakers, The Elms, Marble House), Hotel Viking, The Reef Restaurant
"My Rae of Hope trip was perfect from start to finish. Newport, Rhode Island, is one of my favorite New England towns! Lindsey was able to put the trip together incredibly fast, which I appreciated so much. It was so helpful to escape reality for a moment and just live without worry.
While touring the Newport mansions, I was transformed into the Gilded Age and learned so much about history; followed by a fantastic dinner at The Reef in the Newport Marina and a stay at Hotel Viking. This trip was so helpful because it allowed me to get some much-needed rest and relaxation; plus it was chock-full of adventures which filled my cup. Before I left, I took time to sit by the ocean and reflect on everything. This trip provided so much clarity for me and was a reminder of how important it is to take care of myself.
Throughout my cancer journey, I've always had chaos; scheduling appointments, endless bloodwork, driving myself to surgery, etc. It felt so good to be taken care of like this and have a reminder that life's ocean waves will not be rocky forever. Thanks to YASU for putting together this magical trip for me!"

Usher Las Vegas Residency
"My request was somewhat last minute, but Lindsey did everything she could to make sure I had the best possible experience. The seats were great, the energy was electric, and I got to see one of my favorite artists put on an amazing show! A quick trip to Vegas was the last summer vacation I had planned for myself before work gets really hectic for me, so being able to share this experience with my boyfriend as a “thank you for putting up with me” excursion was the perfect way to end our trip. Thank you to Rae of Hope & YASU for creating a variety of opportunities for relaxation to forget the troubles of what it means to be a survivor."

Christine
August 18-19, 2022
Bedford Springs Resort
"I received this respite trip at the time when I needed it the most. I have been dealing with chronic health issues for years that were the result of the long-term effects of the chemotherapy and radiation I received from battling Hodgkin’s lymphoma three times. I have been pushing through pain and dealing with other very stressful events for years. I reached a point where I could no longer function because I ran out of reserves.
Rae of Hope was able to provide me with an overnight stay and spa services at Bedford Springs. I was in such a low place that I could not take care of myself, and desperately needed to have someone take care of me, even if briefly. The total body exfoliation and massage that I received made me feel relaxed for the first time in over a year. The massage also helped to release emotions that I had been storing in my body with tension for a long time.
Upon return from this respite trip, I had enough energy restored that I was able to start implementing the self care strategies that needed to be implemented for me to heal. The effects of treatment change our bodies forever. Some of us deal daily with pain, fatigue, cognitive changes, and many other side effects from treatment that don’t go away when treatment ends. These trips are so vital in helping those of us in treatment, as well as those of us who are dealing with the long-term effects of treatment, to feel a ray of hope that things won’t always feel the way they feel right now."

The Inn at Christmas Place, Pigeon Forge, TN
"We loved our experience at The Inn at Christmas Place! First things first, the whole hotel is decorated for Christmas all year round (which we enjoy since we love this holiday), and there were even visits with Santa every day - an added bonus for children! More specifically, my family wanted to have an enjoyable trip, which allowed us to get away and just relax together.
These are things that we usually never get to do in usual life due to my cancer treatments and appointments. We loved swimming in the hotel pool, going out to local restaurants, and having cookies every night from Mrs. Claus. We also took a 20 minute trip to Gatlinburg to experience the Wild Bear Falls Water Park for another swimming adventure.
I am so grateful to YASU for providing Rae of Hope to cancer survivors. It was such a relief to be with my husband and my son; all we wanted was to spend time together without having to think about cancer, and I couldn't have done it without YASU's support."

"Being able to go to the NKOTB concert helped me forget all my worries for a night and just be myself with my friend Terra. Not having to worry about the money to pay for it all, and leaving everything up to Yasu and Rae of Hope, was wonderful! I felt so happy from the whole experience and the happiness is lasting especially when thinking about it and looking back with the pictures. I don't think I could stop smiling the whole time!"

June 27-28, 2022
Alderbrook Resort and Spa
Overnight stay at the resort, couples massage and dinner
"It was amazing! We happened to stay the night and there was also a wedding. So on top of the already amazing experience we got to enjoy watching an outdoor wedding, wedding music and a fireworks show. The drive out there alone was stunning, and I probably would have been satisfied just to do that. But I could not believe it when we walked into the room. The water view was phenomenal! The room had a huge soaking tub (I may have taken 2 baths over the course of our overnight). The bed was so comfortable. The massage was the best I've ever experienced. My husband (who is not actually a fan of massages) agreed that it was amazing. The food was the best I've ever tasted.
It was so nice just to have no responsibilities but spending time together. We were able to take several hikes and reconnect with nature and each other. We were able to rest and recharge. It truly was a once in a lifetime experience and I feel so blessed to have been able to participate in it. I felt ready to take on the world again once it was over. Actually, that's not true. I was ready to move in there and stay forever, but knowing I needed to get back to reality, I was ready. It was so amazing to just be, and not forced to deal with the realities of my everyday life as it is now. I am telling every young adult with cancer I know about YASU and the Rae of Hope respite program. It is something everyone should get a chance to experience."

Oak Bay Beach Hotel
Two nights in an oceanfront room
"A million thanks to YASU and the Rae of Hope Foundation for helping to fulfill a year-long dream.
Last year, while I was stuck at home and preparing for a stem cell transplant, my partner and I daydreamed about staying at the beautiful Oak Bay Beach Hotel on Vancouver Island, celebrating the end of a long and difficult chapter with the beginning of a newer, brighter one.
Normally, we would’ve passed on the opportunity due to it being out of our price range…but after sharing the idea with our friends at YASU, they helped us book two free nights with the hotel’s best ocean view. In these two special days, I reconnected with nature, with travel, and with finding home in new places…even better, the experience opened my heart and mind to the new life I’ve spent years yearning for. The mineral baths and spa treatments didn’t hurt either!
If you’re a current or former patient dreaming of a trip or experience that would bring hope, joy, relief, or a simple boost of energy, don’t hesitate to reach out to this impactful organization. The highlight of our year, no doubt!"

The spa treatments were such a treat and not only did I feel completely at peace, but the massage relieved all of my chronic pain. This was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for me that I will never forget! We both smiled all weekend long!"

Gift certificate to furnish new doll house
Lauren Rogus, a 22 year old, is coping with 2 cancers simultaneously; one of which is extremely rare. As a 22 year old woman still living with her parents, staying home due to her illness and Covid, she wasn't able to venture out for a Rae of Hope experience. Instead we brought respite to her by sponsoring a gift certificate for her to furnish a new doll house she was gifted.
"Oh my goodness! I was so surprised when I opened up a HUGE gift certificate to the dollhouse store! I started crying. I felt so blessed! Thank you so much!!! I can’t thank you all enough for such a special gift! Thank you, thank you, thank you! I was so shocked I became speechless! I can’t wait to start furnishing my doll house! I appreciate YASU's support and for being there for me. It makes me feel less alone, especially since Covid restricts me from leaving the house."

Kasandra
November 22-23, 2021
Overnight stay at Disney World's Animal Kingdom Lodge
Kasandra, her husband and their 2 sons had the best time and a much needed break from life as a stage 4 YA Breast Cancer Survivor: "The Rae of Hope respite day experience was amazing! Leading to the experience, my family and I were exhausted from all that is tied to my metastatic breast cancer diagnosis and struggled to break away from the day-to-day repetitive tasks that brought us little joy. I yearned for something to get us out of our challenging routine and help us appreciate our time together as a family.
My respite day helped change our mindset and let us concentrate on what is most important: making memories together as a family. We enjoyed pool time, fireworks, thrilling rides, and even a dance party while at Disney.
As a mother, I was able to see the amazement and excitement that Disney brought my children, which was incredibly heartwarming, but more importantly, it helped my husband and me find a better balance in our day-to-day lives. While we still accomplish our daily responsibilities, we are much more conscious of planning special family time to better appreciate our moments together and create joyful memories that will last a lifetime."

Hilary
February 11-12, 2022
Overnight stay at Bedford Springs, PA
Hilary and her partner soaked up R&R with massages and dinner at the historic Bedford Springs! She put all the stress that stage 3 Renal Cell Carcinoma has caused and said, "I’m lucky to find support in an organization like YASU, who “gets it.” They recently sent me on a weekend trip to Bedford Springs with my partner. I had thought that it was going to be an opportunity to forget about my journey, but instead I took time to remember. To think. To feel. To process.
While there I had a bath ritual and massage at the spa, attended a meditation class, walked through nature and drank from the natural springs. I had vouchers to get free coffee in the mornings and YASU treated my partner and I to a fabulous dinner in the crystal room. Instead of escaping, I realized that it's okay to be a different person today than I was before cancer. That’s a vital part of *my* journey in this lifetime. I’ll constantly be in a state of transformation, of processing, of mourning.
YASU gave me a chance to reflect and realize that “surviving” cancer is a never ending journey, and that’s okay. I'm forever grateful to YASU, everyone who works there and everyone I've met through the organization!"

Hidden Valley Ski Resort
Mandy, a Breast Cancer Survivor is likely the biggest fan of skiing among anyone you know! Thanks to Rae of Hope, she spent an entire day on the slopes and said, "I cannot thank YASU, Rae of Hope & Rae's family enough for this amazing gift. I'm still in some ways trying to process the overwhelming generosity.
I started skiing when I was 5 years old, my most favorite place has always been in the mountains. Since I was diagnosed with TNBC (Triple Negative Breast Cancer) at 37 in 2017, I haven't done much skiing. Last season I could literally hear the mountains calling my name. I put on the most uncomfortable boots in the world, stepped into those bindings and away I went. It was like riding a bike, pure joy and peace.
Going into this season I didn't make any commitments, season pass-wise, as I was caring for my elderly uncle. I lost him on Thanksgiving morning 2021. Those mountains were speaking much louder now...
I didn't ask for much help during cancer treatments/surgery/post surgery and years afterwards. Partially because when you're in it, you're just focused on fighting your ass off and you have no idea what you need, want, or what your body will allow you to have. But Rae of Hope spoke to me...just like those mountains.I was friends with Raelene and still to this day miss her terribly. I miss her smile, laugh and awesome text messages. I needed an escape, I needed a way to process, grieve, be alone and just BE. I literally heard Rae's voice telling me to go to my happy place, now it may not have been her most ideal spot since it wasn't poolside, but layering up is my idea of bliss!
I anxiously applied for a season pass to ski at Hidden Valley...remember I'm not that great at asking for things! Snow started to finally fall after the first of the year. I cried when I got the email letting me know that a pass was waiting for me at the office. And I've been loving it ever since!
There are few things that I love more than being on a ski lift, hearing the skis glide below you, checking out your next run and what side to come down, the utter beauty of Mother Nature. I love the peace in the mountains and how everything disappears once I'm locked into those bindings. It makes my soul smile and fills my heart with joy. I come home sore, exhausted and alive every single time. It feels like a new part of me awakes with each run.
Thank you Rae...thank you for that last message."

Denelle is a breast cancer survivor whose world is devoted to her young daughter. As you know, parents need a break; especially after all she's endured as a YA cancer survivor! Denelle released every ounce of stress with a massage, facial, and hair done at the Sirius Day Spa.
After her experience she said, "Getting my spa treatment was very special. After having major anxiety about finding another lump in my breast, I really needed some self-care and relaxation. It has been a hard time. I realized while on the table that I never get much quiet time, not just in life... but in my HEAD. It's always so chaotic and stressed. It was amazing to unwind, meditate, and feel rejuvenated. Thank you to everyone involved!! xo."
